Welcome to the Real Time Linux Foundation
What is Real Time Linux ?
GNU/Linux has become a powerful operating system challenging the OS and computer market, because it is open source and adaptable to different hardware and computing problems. As a general purpose operating system kernel, however, Linux optimizes average performance, and is not that appropriate for real time applications.
Nevertheless, there are some groups spread around the world developing modifications to the Linux kernel in order to provide a real time operating system. These Linux modifications are already used in many sophisticated real time applications, and form a good basis for embedded systems.
What is the Real Time Linux Foundation ?
The development for the aforementioned Linux adaptations is done in parallel by different groups which introduces fruitful competition and, as long as open source is respected, provides fast development. However, there should be one entry point into the world of real time Linux which offers a common platform for discussion. This unique entry point serves as resort with excellent documentation and information on companies providing related real time services. In order to achieve this, a well balanced group has been established between industry, academia, users and developers now known as the Real Time Linux Foundation and implemented as nonprofit corporation. What is this site good for ?
If you are already a developer of a real time operating system or even one for the Linux kernel, or somebody looking for a Linux based real time operating system, go to Variants in order to see which real time implementation is appropriate for you. If you are, however, interested in using an existing real time Linux variant for an industrial or university project, look in Projects in order to get an apperçu of running real time Linux systems, then proceed to Documentation for reading how to put your project into practice. Subscribe to one of the Mailing lists and you will get real support. Then, ifyou need professional support, take a look at the Solutions page for professional support for your project.
